It’s been a busy time for Arma 3 fans and Bohemia Interactive. In addition to releasing the free Malden DLC, there’s also the new free 5-vs-5 tactical shooter Argo to enjoy.
The development of Argo came via the Bohemia Incubator, which allows for public experiments by the team. And it’s been made possible partly by the release of the re-imagined Malden island as a location in the latest version of Arma. As you’d imagine for a game based on Arma 3, it’s a fairly hardcore shooter.
There’s not much need for a plot. But basically you’re a mercenary fighting over the remains of a crashed space station in one of three competitive modes (Clash, Link and Raid). You can earn experience points based on your in-game performance which unlocks new weapons, attachments and gear.
Interestingly, there’s also a 10-player co-operative mode versus the AI in an open-world setting, named Combat Patrol. This mode has also made it to Arma 3 with the Malden DLC release, but with a limit of 12 players in the Arma version.
And finally for Argo, there’s also a 3D Scenario Editor to set up your own game modes and operations or modify existing set-ups. That includes new structures and buildings on the 62 km square island.
As a free, Arma-based creation, you don’t need to pay anthing to try Argo. It’s available now for free on Steam. But if you do want to support the development, there’s an Argo Supporters Pack costing £6.99 (9.99 in Euros). It can be bought via Steam or the Bohemia store and includes some cosmetic in-game rewards, including 13 exclusive animations for the MVP screen at the end of each match, a bundle of 23 unique items and your name will be highlighted on the leaderboards.
More useful for those wanting to pay is the abaility to use vehicles in the 3D Scenario Editor, and access to premium Argo Support servers. But as a free, Arma-based game, there’s nothing to stop you giving the Argo a try.
