Alongside the arrival of the new Busan map, there’s the new D.Va Overwatch animated short Shooting Star available now to enjoy. It’s an origin story exploring the past of the South Korean gamer turned mech pilot. And shows more of a serious side to the teenage Hana Song before she teamed with the rest of the Overwatch heroes.
It shows her fighting as part of the Mobile Ex-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA) against the Gwisin Omnic force which emerged from the East China Sea to repeatedly attack Busan. The short includes brief appearances for the rest of the team in still shots, with fellow pilots Casino, D.Mon, King and Overlord. Commanding officer Captain Myung doesn’t appear, but apparently her voice will be heard on the Busan map.
We get to see each mecha has unique features, both in the video and the storage pods in the MEKA base on Busan.
One person that does make a prominent appearance as part of the Shooting Star short is Dae-Hyun. Each mech pilot has a specific mechanic assigned to them. And while the others appear to be on leave, D.Va and Dae-Hyun remain at the base, despite the fact D.Va appears to mainly want to work on her mech herself.
We can’t see him featuring as prominently in the game itself as armourers Torbjorn and Brigitte Lindholm, but it’s good to see D.Va acknowledging his help in the film.

What else is revealed? Either D.Va or Dae-Hyun is listening to Lucio in their home base, with his icon on the screen in the MEKA Base. So her voice lines previously in the game are being proven to be more true than just flattery.
Other easter eggs include the fact one hotel in the Busan skyline is a Protoss hotel, referencing the race from Starcraft. In which D.Va is obviously a former pro player. And which is also referenced in the Blizzard World map.
In addition to the Nano cola and snacks, there’s also a Nano skin revealed at the end of the cinematic, as D.Va poses with her mech.
So what do you think about the new D.Va Overwatch animated short Shooting Star? As a D.Va main, it’s great to see more behind the character, and also open up the possibility of more of the MEKA squad potentially making their way into Overwatch in some way. But do you agree? And are there any other secrets and reveals I’ve missed?
