E3 2011: BioShock to PSVita
BioShock can be considered to be a classic, and a very good one at that. Now, thanks to a powerful bit of portable hardware, BioShock will be with you everywhere you go.
After Sony unveiled their PlayStation Portable replacement, the recently renamed Next Generation Portable to PSVita, it’s easy to see why developers Irrational Games thought they could now offer their title to a wider audience, stating that the game will be at home on the device.
Irrational’s creative director and co-founder Ken Levine, whipped out a PSVita at Sony’s E3 conference when he made the surprising announcement, which can only mean good things to Bio-fans.
With the PSVita arriving worldwide later this year, we can expect that any sort of BioShock related title will not make an appearance on the device until late 2012.
We’ll have more news on this title in the coming months.
E3 2011: Battlefield 3 out before MW3
As war heats up between who makes the superior, realistic modern war game, publishers Electronic Arts aim to please loyal Battlefielders by releasing their title before the also eagerly awaited Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 from Activision.
Okay, so the titles aren’t really the same when it comes down to actual combat, though the developers emphasis on making the gamers playing environment as real as possible, with mission in New York or Iraq and millions of pounds spent on physics engines, makes these games. Nowadays, realism goes a long way.
Now for the date… EA’s Battlefield 3 will be out on October 25th, a whole two weeks before Activistion’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.
Check out the gameplay video from the “My Life” trailer and say that doesn’t look beautiful.

Dust 514 revealed as a Playstation 3 exclusive
It’s been revealed at E3 that the innovative Dust 514 first-person shooter which ties-in and interacts with existing MMO Eve Online, will be exclusive to the Sony Playstation 3.
There wasn’t much given in the way of more details, but we do know that the sci-fi shooter which allows players to work as planetary mercenaries for the Eve Online community, will support the Move motion control system and include some type of functionality for the Sony Vita handheld.
We’ll find out more when the closed beta arrives for PS3 at the end of 2011, followed by the full release in the Spring of 2012. It’s being developed by CCP, the creators of Eve Online, and utilises Unreal Engine. Apparently it will include micro-transactions in some way, although the exact details haven’t been released.
As fans of all the console platforms it’s sad news for those who prefer the Xbox 360 – the cross-platform opportunity between PC and Xbox 360 would be have been interesting with Microsoft’s support. And presumably the agreement was reached long before Sony became such a popular (and successful) target for hackers, given that noone wants to see their MMO hit by hackers.
Ubisoft announces Brothers In Arms Furious 4
It might get a little overlooked due to the huge interest in the Call of Duty and Battlefield series, but Brothers in Arms has some interesting credentials – and the fourth game in the main series, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, has just been announced by Ubisoft at E3.
The Brothers in Arms games are developed by Gearbox Software, who more recently took on the Duke Nukem franchise to finally get Duke Nukem Forever released. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 was the first in the series, released in 2005 for the original Xbox, PS2 and PC, concentrating more on team strategy and tactics. It also made it onto the Wii in 2008.
It was followed by Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood and Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, with several spin-off games developed by GameLoft for mobile phones and handhelds including the Nintendo DS.
Furious 4 is again developed by Gearbox, and will be coming to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in the first half of 2012. It seems to show a change in direction for the series, as it will ‘spin the series in a new direction’ with ‘a brutal first person shooter’.
Promised is a campaign mode, with up to four-player co-op action as the Furious 4 attempt to take on the Nazis and chase the Fuhrer himself by facing down an experimental Nazi army conceived in secret by the Third Reich. In doing so, the four squad members, Crockett, Stitch, Chock and Montana, will apparently use ‘special weaponry and unexpected combat abilities’ – judging by the new Brothers in Arms Furios Four website, these include a cattle brand, electric torture, tomahawk, and helmet chainsaw.
So more Inglorious Duke Nukem Bastards than Band of Brothers or the early Call of Duty and Medal of Honour games. Gearbox boss Randy Pickford referred to it onstage as a ‘re-imagining’ of World War 2, so don’t go looking for historical accuracy and gritty realism.
“The Brothers in Arms franchise has been renowned for its gritty direction that has dropped players into the middle of World War II,” said Adam Novickas, U.S. director of marketing at Ubisoft. “With Brothers in Arms Furious 4, Gearbox brings the action to a whole new level filled with unexpected twists and over-the-top battles that are sure to please new players and fans alike.”
Hmmmm…
We’re pretty open-minded about Brothers in Arms Furious 4, but the limited early info does raise a few worries. Given that we have Duke Nukem for comedy violence, and the modern shooters vary in realism and authenticity, is this the right time for Brothers in Arms to go down the funny road, rather than claiming the vacant title of the ultimate in WW2 shooters?
It’s certainly possible to do, whether you liked Inglorious Bastards, or remember the likes of Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos from comic books, but the E3 teaser trailer of a barroom brawl suggests that we’re going straight down the fairly crass blood and guts route. We’ll see what happens when WW2 veterans and German videogame boards catch sight of it before the 2012 release.
E3 2011: Halo 4 – The first of three?
It’s that time of year. E3 is upon us and team Microsoft are first on the scene with their Xbox Keynote.
We’ll get to the other titles soon, but we’ll begin with one of the biggest sci-fi FPS franchises in all of Xbox kind. Halo. Master Chief and Cortana mark their return in Halo 4, the first instalment of an all new trilogy.
As expected, the story begins where Halo 3 finishes. There isn’t much to go on, but the huge ship like, welcome home opening, is definitely the start to another chapter. And an unpleasant one at that.
Check out the teaser trailer shown at today’s E3 keynote here.
One thing that did surprise me on this announcement was that there’s to be this new trilogy. A fourth would have been good, but to carry on with another two?! Has the Halo franchise gone a little too far, too deep into space?!
With this in mind, it makes it clearer as to why the talented bunch at Bungie wanted to try something new and breakaway from continuing with the Halo universe.
Well, here’s hoping 343 Industries can fill the void and do an epic number on one hell of a franchise.
… Go on… Speak your mind below…
