FPS games win at 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Portal 2 all took awards home at the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, held by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences in Las Vegas. Noone could compete with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which took Game of the Year in a total of five awards, but it was stilla  good showing for the first person shooter genre.

Portal 2 took Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, beating Uncharted 3, LA Noire, LittleBigPlanet 2 and InFamous 2.

Portal 2 also won in Outstanding Character Performance, with Wheatley beating Uncharted 3 dueo Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan, Cole Phelps from LA Noire, and Adam Jensen of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. And finally, Portal 2 also took Outstanding Achievement in Connectivity over Battlefield 3, CoD: MW3, Dragon Age 2 and Uncharted 3.

Battlefield 3 won the Outstanding Achivement in Sound Design, beating FPS rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, L.A Noise, Need for Speed: The Run and Uncharted 3.

And Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 did take the win in Action Game of the Year, against Battlefield 3, Dead Space 2, Gears of War 3 and Saints Row: The Third.

 

 

Portal 2 and Black Ops win at Gamesmaster Golden Joysticks

Portal 2 was awarded the Ultimate Game of the Year in association with Alienware at the annual Gamesmaster Golden Joystick awards on Friday, picking up the top accolade in the 29th year of the awards.

In addition to the award for Valve’s first person puzzle game, Call of Duty: Black Ops picked up the Shooter Game of the Year in association with Turtle Beach.

The awards came from voting by the general public, with over 2.06 million votes cast, which is a new Guiness World Record for a gaming awards.

Vote for Best Shooter at 2011 Golden Joysticks

It’s been a big year for FPS shooting games, and that’s reflected in the 2011 Gamesmaster Golden Joystick Award shortlist, with several of the nominees in the Best Shooter category also having a good chance of potentially claiming the Ultimate Game of the Year in the world’s longest-running videgame awards.

The shortlist for your votes in the Best Shooter category are:

• Brink
• Bulletstorm
• Call of Duty: Black Ops
• Crysis 2
• Dead Space
• F.3.A.R.
• Goldeneye 007
• Halo Reach
• Homefront
• Killzone 3
• Medal of Honor
• Red Faction Armageddon
• Singularity
• Vanquish

If we had to try and predict the winner, seeing as it’s entirely based on user votes, we’d probably go for Black Ops due to the record-breaking number of sales, and continued success of the series, but there are a few titles that could cause an upset (Crysis 2, Halo Reach, Killzone 3 for example, although platform exclusives are at a big disadvantage).

The Ultimate Game of the Year also includes several shooters:

• Bulletstorm
• Call of Duty Black Ops
• Fallout New Vegas (Also in the RPG category)
• Killzone 3
• Portal 2 (Which is also in the Best Action/Adventure category)

In the Mobile Gaming category, N.O.V.A 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance is a possible FPS winner.

And finally, there’s the One to Watch category with:

• Aliens: Colonial Marines
• Battlefield 3
• Bioshock Infinite
• Farcry 3
• Halo 4
• Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

That’s a lot of voting to get done, so you better start now! About the only big release not getting a mention is Duke Nukem Forever, which despite reasonable sales has had a very mixed reception.

Yes we know it’s not an actual FPS… May be we’ll need to update our site and take into account FPP’s (first-person puzzler’s)… It’s first-person… That counts right?!

Well, it’s out and I’m sure many of you have purchased this already. If not, you are probably too busy playing Crysis. Either way, you still need to buy this!

Game of the Year?! Oh it’ll be up there most definitely!!

With Portal 2, you get reunited with an old friend in the Companion Cube, and continue trying to solve the mind bendingly delightful physics based puzzles which made Portal well loved by all you gamers out there. But there’s no point making a sequel unless you have added obstacles right?! Well, we have some tractor beams, laser redirection and paint-like gels granting special properties to objects it touches. Not only that, there’s a two player co-operative mode which may come in use if you get a little stuck.

Get your hands on Portal 2 from Steam directly, or go for the traditional methods of hard copies from Play.com, with pre-orders at GAME and GameStation due to Portal’s release date for several retailers is that of the 21st.
