January 14, 2014 By DanThornton 1 Comment

The 2014 Call of Duty Championship has been announced, with the best 32 teams from around the world to compete in Los Angeles on March 28-30, 2014 for a share of the $1 million prize pool.

Call of Duty® Championship Trailer – Official Call of Duty: Ghosts Video

The tournament is part-sponsored by Microsoft, which means it’s the first official Call of Duty event to be played on the Xbox One, and matches will be streamed on Xbox Live in addition to MLG.tv. It comes just after an announcement by Infinity Ward that there will be updates to Ghosts to improve the eSports aspects of the game. Those changes are:

  • Restrict Ghillie suits in competitive rules.
  • Restrict Tracker Sights in competitive rules.
  • Restrict Danger Close in competitive rules.
  • Disable third-person spectating in competitive Private Matches.
  •  Add a kill feed to Broadcaster mode.
  • Address Broadcaster mode stability (squash crash bugs).

Plus:

Rules:

  •         Removal of split-screen in Private match when eSports rules are enabled.
  •         Add eSports rules to Clan vs. Clan playlist.
  •         Open Clan v Clan playlist to allow solo player entry & mixed clan teams.
  •         Modify Dead Silence/Amplify functionality.

S&D:

  •         Resolve the defuse timer animation discrepancy.
  •         Modify the defuse time sound effects if the defuse process is cancelled.

Broadcaster Mode:

  •         Add game action overlays where needed (flag captures, etc.).
  •         Resolve the leaderboard’s red death indicator delay.
  •         Roll over player in scoreboard to highlight arrow in mini-map.

New Platform:

  •         Investigating the addition of Xbox One LAN support.

2014 Call of Duty Championship Details:

Entry is open to anyone in the world, as long as they meet the requirements of the official rules and regulations. Teams are made up of 4 players, and all competitors need to be 18 or older. You can only take part in the qualifying for 1 country ot region, and teams need to include the same roster of players throughout qualifying.

CoDeSports Rules must be enabled for all games, and there are specific game type rules and map lists available on the Major League Gaming website – for instance, the UK qualifiers are 3 matches of Blitz, 4 matches of Domination and 4 matches of Search & Destroy.

There’s a list of restritced items, including Secondary Launchers, Marksman Rifles, Riot Shield. Restricted Lethals include the I.E.D, and various perks are restricted, including Recon, Amplify, Gambler, Ping, Deadeye, Stalker and Danger Close.

It kicks off with the United Kingdom/Ireland and South Korea Preliminary Qualifiers on January 18th. For all the dates, rules and registration details visit the Major League Gaming site.

Live regional finals take place on:

  • Australia/New Zealand: Sydney Feb 29-March 2
  • Europe: London Feb 28-March 2
  • USA: Florida March 7-9

So there’s not a huge amount of time left before it kicks off, but you can still get a team together and sign up. If so, good luck and let us know how you get on!
