The day the Duke returned

June 15, 2011 By Kalps Mistry 5 Comments

At last. After 14 years,.. The Duke marks his return on the gaming scene.

Last Friday, Duke Nukem Forever hit all of Europe, with the West getting their hands on a copy today. But are we gamers as excited about the title now then we were back in 1997 when 3D Realms first made the announcement? Some are… Some aren’t.

The game… The concept… The character… It’s a little… Dare I say it?! Out of date?! I can see why some aren’t as excited. We’ve had Crysis, Half-Life, Halo FPSs and more. We’ve had better games to play in Dukes absence.

Okay okay, Duke Nukem was just a whole load of toilet humour with a nonsense storyline, going around shooting pig cops and paying showgirls and strippers to flash their pixels at you… (Yes we all did it and remember it well! Don’t hide from that!!) and that was mostly it. But we’ve grown up haven’t we? We play more mature FPSs with the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield to add to the few I stated before.

If anything, Duke Nukem has taken a beating. It has become a laughing stock, a Joke to all gamers, in that a hyped game was never going to see the light of day thanks to endless delays after each new announcement. Then, in 2001, we were told it would be released “when it’s done”. Makes sense right?

Well it’s out now. Are you happy?

Duke had nearly met his match last year, up until Randy Pitchford from Gearbox Software, a veteran of 3D Realms past, bought the IP in order to finish off what 3D Realms were struggling to do, and probably canned several times without making it public.

Now, as the title is a reality amongst us, reviews for the game seem to be more so mixed, if not great at all. One might call it 14 years of waste. 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann however gave a new meaning to the acronym ‘DNF’ from ‘Did Not Finish’ to a more appropriate ‘Day to Never Forget’ as the wait came to an end. All would have been alright had the game met expectations…

I loved the original FPS outing, makes it more fitting for myself to write a review, so keep a look out for it.

So, was Duke worth the wait for those of you who bought it? Worth the £40 price tag for 14 years of development and mixed reviews?

You must have opinions of this title… 14 years worth… Leave them below guys.

Stfu. the game is a classic, and it is amazing. out of date? no. Duke Nukem is the badass that we all wanted to be as a kid growing up playing this game, and the return of the duke is just pure epic. It was worth the wait for the return of a classic, after being cancelled and pushed back time after time. I am very happy with my purchase now that it is released in the US. Hail to the king baby.

The game is utter, absolute, concentrated, distilled shit. Everything is broken. Graphics, sound, mechanics, the lack of anything new…it’s a failure just like anyone who still clings to ‘THE DUKE’.

Those of us that are of the age to have been influenced by Duke Nukem 3D will have (hopefully) matured and now want something a bit more polished and well, working than Duke Nukem Forever.

It’s great that its finally out and it’s something to treasure, but I found it unplayable. It’s mediocre at best and will only be bought by those wearing rose tinted specs (or more likely ltd edition Duke sunglasses), or the next generation of young gamers that will buy it for the hype.

So just because I’m not skilled in the art of video game development it means I should just bend over and gratefully accept any half-arsed title that makes it’s way on the shelves at Game? And then part with my own money for the privilege of owning said half-arsed title? No, I don’t think so. As a consumer I’m entitled to decide what I choose to buy and if something is falling short of the mark, voice my opinions.

I’m not questioning the ability of the team at 2K, I just think that based on my own opinion the game isn’t very good. Just like I would know if I didn’t like a meal cooked up by a 3-star Michelin chef or didn’t think a £250k Italian supercar was worth the money.

I take it you thought the Emperor’s new clothes were impeccably fashioned?
