Black Ops 3 not limited by last-gen consoles

June 13, 2015 By Robert Knight Leave a Comment

Following the news that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be coming to PS3 and Xbox 360, many fans have become concerned that last-gen consoles will hold back the game’s development on the current-gen consoles. Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar, though, has told fans that they “don’t have to hope” last-gen development doesn’t affect current-gen development.

PS3 Xbox 360

Activision recentley announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Vonderhaar has reiterated that Treyarch is focused solely on the development of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. They are not leaving anything out of the current-gen version of the game to accommodate for the last-gen consoles. He also stated that the decision to bring Black Ops 3 to Xbox 360 and PS3, and to hand the last-gen versions to Beenox and Mercenary Technology, was made by Activision.

In an attempt to reassure fans that the current-gen version of the game, being developed by Treyarch, won’t be affected by it’s development for last-gen consoles, Vonderhaar revealed that Treyarch “don’t even have last gen dev kits anymore”.

It almost seems as though Vonderhaar, and maybe even Treyarch, want nothing to do with the last-gen development of the game, judging by his response to this fan’s praise…

Vonderhaar’s comments are not new news, though. Activision’s initial statement revealing that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 would be available to last-gen gamers had already indicated that Treyarch would not be leaving things out of the PC, Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game to accommodate for the last-gen consoles. Instead, the features that are included in the current-gen edition of the game that the last-gen consoles are not capable of supporting will be left out of, or altered for, the last-gen game.

Activision have already informed us that the campaign mode will be limited to two players rather than the four players available on the current-gen consoles. It can also be expected that other game modes will be simplified so that they can support last-gen consoles, too.

Some are comparing Black Ops 3 to the latest title, Advanced Warfare. Although Advanced Warfare was created by two different studios (Sledgehammer Games for current-gen, High Moon for last-gen), the game was exactly the same on all consoles. It was only recently that the limited RAM space on the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles meant that the last-gen consoles had to miss out on certain updates. However, from what Treyarch have been saying, this will not be the case with Black Ops 3, and the game will undoubtedly be better on the current-gen consoles.

If there was just one reason to upgrade from last-gen to current-gen, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 would be that reason.
