Microsoft’s E3 conference took place today, and it kicked off with Halo 5: Guardians.
We got to see gameplay from both the campaign and multiplayer modes. The campaign gameplay showed us the team of Spartan IV’s in action, led by Locke. The rest of the team was also shown, giving us some insight as to how the four player campaign will work.
Fireteam Osiris:
- Jameson Locke
- Holly Tanaka
- Edward Buck
- Olympia Vale
Apart from what we saw in the campaign gameplay, we didn’t really learn all that much about the story. We only got to see things from Locke’s perspective. The Spartans mention the Arbiter preparing to free a city, so it appears that the Covenant is falling apart.
We saw Fireteam Osiris fighting the Prometheans, and we learned that Master Chief was looking for a Guardian, who he seems to find. It looks as though the Guardian he finds is a Promethean, although that is only implied. When Fireteam Osiris show up, they learn that the Prometheans gave Master Chief passage, but refuse to help Locke and his team.
We got to see some of the weapons that will feature in the game. We saw the Spartans using the standard Assault Rifle, as well as a Shotgun. The Energy Sword makes a return, too. A new weapon called the Plasma Caster was shown off. It shoots balls of energy and can be charged up to fire a massive ball that acts like a Covenant sticky grenade.
Several vehicles are making a return, such as the Mantis, Wraith, Scarab and Banshee. Speaking on the E3 post-show, 343 confirmed that the Forerunner flying vehicle we see in the multiplayer footage is the Phaeton (spelling unconfirmed).
We got to see a highlight reel of multiplayer footage. New maps are much larger than those on previous titles, and will have a maximum of 24 players.
We saw a new game mode called Warzone, which appears to be the evolution of Firefight, where you will come up against countless numbers of enemies on a huge map.
Halo 5: Guardians is out in the UK on October 27th 2015.
