E3 2015 – DOOM Returns

June 16, 2015 By Kalps Mistry Leave a Comment

There was little mention of DOOM prior to E3 2015. Attendee’s of last years’ QuakeCon were luck enough to see Id Software’s reveal, but those who knew little of this title, would have been as surprised as I was watching Bethesda’s inaugural E3 presentation on Sunday. It was pretty (or bloody?) evident that DOOM had returned… In it’s most goriest form!

Many gamers weren’t too impressed with DOOM 3 when it hit the shop floor way back in 2004. Walking around with a torch, being jump scared and generally not being pleased with the end product. Released with bugs, dull, slow enemies and a four (yes four) player multiplayer (later patched to eight players), many had thought DOOM lost it’s touch.

I remembered DOOM as a run and all guns blazing, sprite filled classic PC game with no faffing about using torches and slowly walking from room to room. And it seems that after seven years development, it’s nice to see what many had hoped D3 should have been.

Check out the gameplay trailer from E3…

As you wonder around Mars taking in the detailed scenery courtesy of the game’s Id Tech 6 engine, you encounter many familiar looking demon foes, rip off countless arms, stomp on chests and heads, splattering gallons of blood and guts with each shotgun blast along your way. It looks like Id Software wanted to go back to the original’s defining roots of fast, violent, gameplay. Single and double barreled shotguns, plasma rifles and the iconic chainsaw all make a welcomed return. Well, you did want to dismember demons arms and heads with the chainsaw again right?

Another intriguing element of Doom is its intuitive level editor with the Snapmap mode, a mode intended for any fan or player to get creative and design their own multiplayer maps using a simple grid-based system, as well as the ability to share new maps online.

Stay tuned for more DOOM related news and information in build up for the games release in 2016, on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
