Call of Duty: WWII is out very soon. With the official release on November 3rd, 2017, there’s not long before you’ll be able to find out whether it lives up to the best games in the series. Along with a return to a more realistic historical military setting, Sledgehammer Games are also sending you back to a familiar map. As this new Call of Duty: WWII Carentan map trailer shows.
We’ve seen a fair number of maps appear and reappear in multiple Call of Duty titles. And Carentan is no exception. But to keep with the idea that Call of Duty: WWII is going back to the original titles, Carentan is a serious blast from the past.
It originally appears in Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, and PC-only expansion Call of Duty: United Offensive. If that wasn’t enough, part of it also appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Infection map.
So some of us will have memories of playing it. And most will be coming to it for the first time.
The name comes from the Battle of Carentan, which took place in the French city between June 10-15th, 1944, after the U.S landings at Utah and Omaha Beach. The fighting took place betwen the American 101st Airborne Division and two battaltions of the Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6 of the 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division (the German parachute division). The Nazi forces eventually had to retreat due to a lack of ammunition and reinforcements.
You might also recognise the name from the World War 2 TV series Band of Brothers as Carentan is the third episode of the series. It follows E Company, of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne, and includes their experiences in Carentan.
The new version of Carentan will be available on launch day for owners for the Call of Duty: WWII Deluxe Edition and Season Pass holders. The Call of Duty: WWII Carentan map trailer then teases the first DLC release, which will be called The Resistance, and arrives January 30th, 2018 for PlayStation 4 owners, with other platforms getting it slightly later.
