There’s not long until the Overwatch Second Anniversary Event kicks off on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018. But if you want a bit of a headstart on other players, you should watch the preview video for the new Overwatch Deathmatch Map Petra.
It’s a location purely for Free For All Deathmatch games. And will form part of the first competitive FFA Deathmatch season alongside Chateau Guillard. Petra is based around ruins uncovered by a group of archaeologists. And as previously revealed by Jeff Kaplan in the last Developer Update video, there are some wide open spaces and more enclosed areas. It includes deadly cliffs and a dilapidated bridge stretching across the map above a lethal pit. Plus there’s a green jump pad to access higher levels of the Petra map.

The temple entrance looks pretty cool. And you can see that the mega healthpack will require you making your way into the centre of the map, under the middle of the bridge. Which seems like a pretty risky location. Plus there’s a glimpse of a strange hot air balloon floating around right at the very end of the video. Sadly you’re unlikely to be able to ride around on top of it.
It’ll be interesting to see if this starts a trend for more destructible environments in Overwatch. Although that’s unlikely to happen in any Payload map, it might encourage more players to try the Deatchmatch side of things. And make for some interesting potential strategies if those maps also open up to larger Deathmatch battles. It also might tempt more players into choosing different heroes for Deathmatch games, as there’s a relatively small roster in regular use for most matches.
There’s not long left, so we’ll soon find out how big the related update will be. And what it’s like to finally play the new Overwatch Deathmatch Map Petra.
